Fisheries Management

ESI has the capabilities to perform fisheries management assessments of streams, ponds, and small lakes.

Fish survey in Holiday and SuTwan Lakes, Madison County, Illinois,

Ecological Specialists, Inc. 1993. Results of a fish survey in Holiday and SuTwan Lakes, Madison County, Illinois. Prepared for Holishor Association, Inc. Edwardsville, Illinois. 6pp. 93-005.

Holiday Lake is a private lake located in Madison County, Illinois and owned by Holishor Association. The association is interested in managing the lake for recreational fishing. Holishor contracted Ecological Specialists, Inc. (ESI) to conduct a fishery survey of Holiday Lake and a smaller lake, SuTwan Lake, in 1993. The survey's objective was to characterize the present fishery in these lakes and recommend management alternatives.

Ecological Specialists, Inc. 1993. Mussel habitat suitability and impact analysis of the Tippecanoe River. Volume II: Appendices. Prepared for Indiana Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 200+pp. 92-003.

Previous fish and unionid surveys in the Tippecanoe River revealed a diverse fauna (34 live unionid species, seven species as shells, and 67 fish species). Although currently one of the most diverse rivers in the Midwest, sedimentation and other water quality problems may threaten the river. This two year study was designed to document the location of endangered fish and unionids in the Tippecanoe River, and correlate habitat and watershed conditions with the presence or absence of these taxa. Fifty-three (53) unionid taxa were collected including several species listed as Federally endangered or under status review; live Cyprogenia stegaria, Pleurobema clava, Toxolasma lividus and Villosa fabalis, and shells of Epioblasma o. perobliqua, E. rangiana, and Simpsonaias ambigua. Sixty-five (65) fish taxa were collected including one species under review for federal status (Ammocrypta pellucida) and several Indiana endangered species (Etheostoma tippecanoe, Etheostoma camurum, Percina evides, Moxostoma carinatum). Variables studied in conjunction with unionid fauna included sediment characteristics, including toxicity and percentage fines, water quality, habitat characteristics, and fish fauna. Management recommendations were discussed.
